I know many people made gifs with this part and of course I did too. But every time I watch this beauty, I find my hands are moving by themselves..
The thing I love about this, besides the obvious Cumberpretty, is something a lot of people don’t catch: Sherlock’s not pretending or being a dick here; he’s genuinely confused. Yes, he really did think Molly would appreciate knowing the “truth” about Jim; and yes, he really is surprised when she and John both get so angry at him.
As much as he can be a massive prat sometimes, Sherlock’s also got this lovely innocence about him that you rarely get to see. And okay, yeah, the social confusion’s a big Aspie trait as well; which I identify with a lot more than I’d like to.
^^^ Reblogging for this beautiful comment.
Sherlock often treats people as he wants to be treated I think. He wants people to be straightforward, he despises social niceties, prefers brutal honesty, and I think one of the reasons he and John work is because John does for Sherlock what Sherlock does for others. He doesn’t put up with his shit. John and Sherlock live an “I don’t suffer fools gladly” life. Moffat himself alluded to this, in Sherlock’s case anyway. But think about it, John is straightforward and honest too (as demonstrated in this scene when he points out that Sherlock could’ve been more tactful in his statement to Molly), especially with Sherlock because he recognizes that’s what he needs, and all the while he shows himself to be a genuinely good person. They fit together. One is the brain, the other the heart, and both are so honest with each other that they can’t help but move in harmony and make the other better for sharing their perspective. It’s beautiful.
In. Awe.
John and Sherlock also work because while Sherlock is EXCRUCIATINGLY intelligent, he has absolutely no people skills, as mentioned before. But John has wonderful people skills. He’s loving, kind, gracious, polite, and compassionate: you have to be, being a GOOD doctor. And he translates the world in a way that Sherlock can understand, while Sherlock translates the world that he sees for John.
They work because, like a pair of eyes, they each see a slightly different image of the world that they transpose atop each other to gain a complete view. Sherlock’s life is completely absorbed by the intricacies of crime and of human behavior, but he lacks the holistic understanding of social interaction (either due to being on the autism spectrum or just because of the nature of his work: insert your own headcanon here) that John possesses. Similarly, John understands how to work well with others and how to get necessary information out of them, either through kindness or through manipulation, but he’s not observant enough to have a complete deductive process. So they complete each other through their respective deficiencies.
Honestly, they complete each other. While John functions in society, he cannot find a suitable outlet for his need to save people or to get his adrenaline rush without Sherlock. If he hadn’t met Sherlock he probably would have turned to illicit drugs to get his fix. And while Sherlock is absolutely brilliant, he cannot take care of himself (as evidenced by the numerous mentions of past drug abuse and by Mycroft’s total overprotectiveness) or interact with others in an appropriate way. Without each other they would, in all truth, self-destruct. And seeing them complete each other is just incredible. It’s a form of interdependence that could so easily turn into dangerous co-dependence; and that’s half the fun of watching them, as we get a voyeuristic pleasure of watching this delicate tango of wills so precariously balanced between beneficial and detrimental.
So. Yes. Wow. Long ramble.
Long live well thought out rambles! <3
I LOVE THIS FANDOM SO FUCKING MUCH! We can sustain an intelligent dialogue AND be cracky in the best way!
