no but honestly i can’t imagine they could come back to the friendship mode after what happened like it would be so ridiculous “hey remember that time i almost confessed my love to you on the tarmac” “yeah haha that was fun” there’s literally no way to come back to them just being friends

I feel like this, too. And then I remember:

"There’s no way they could go back to just being friends. John offered to die for Sherlock at the pool, and they agreed to die together……." Followed by Sherlock going right back into Dick mode, using John in a psychological/hallucinatory experiment, and wondering why John would care what the papers say about Sherlock Holmes.

"There’s no way they could go back to just being friends. Sherlock gave up his reputation and faked his death to save John. Sherlock cried teardrops over John’s love and loyalty. Sherlock heard John’s graveside speech and saw him weeping…." Followed by ‘What life, I’ve been away!’ And a silly fake-moustache gig, and ‘I’m you best friend?’ and THEN figuring out his feelings for John but letting John marry and stay with an assassin or whatever is happening, because we have really no clue about Mary’s or Sherlock’s true motives with that.

I think this show has a definite problem with RESOLVING the big, emotional moments it loves to create. And that is one of my biggest sources of doubt and disappointment with it.

[bolding added] EXACTLY this.  The build-up is exquisite, and then the resolution is either off-camera, insignificant, or just overlooked. Very unsatisfying, and over time it makes you doubt the authenticity and emotionality of the build-up, which takes all the joy out of the show.
